Building Automation and Internet of Things (IoT) devices

Building automation and Internet of Things (IoT) devices are technological advancements that have greatly increased the efficiency of running a building and given owners and operators more control than ever before. IoT devices interact with the physical world in ways conventional IT devices do not, and these devices cannot be monitored or accessed in the same ways as conventional IT devices. From the locks on doors to the lights overhead, cyber criminals can target numerous parts of today’s “smart” buildings.

To address this issue, the non-profit organization Building Cyber Security (BCS) has developed cybersecurity standards based on the International Electrotechnical Commission (ISA/IEC) 62443 and CIS Critical Security Controls Implementation Groups (IG) 1, 2, and 3 standards. Two experts from the BCS team, Fred Gordy and Michael MacMahon, will discuss the development of the BCS framework, its importance, and how it will impact commercial real estate.
