JOB DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

Background

KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Academies are a growing number of college-preparatory public schools that accept students regardless of previous academic achievement, conduct, or socioeconomic background. KIPP students are in school from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, every other Saturday, and for three weeks during the summer. KIPP was created to ensure that the pipeline to college is filled with students from educationally underserved communities, who possess the skills necessary to succeed in college and the competitive world beyond. There are two KIPP Academies in the Metro-Atlanta area: KIPP West Atlanta Young Scholars (WAYS) Academy is an Atlanta Public Schools charter school and KIPP South Fulton Academy is a Fulton County charter school. Additional schools are planned for the next few years.

Overview

The KIPP Metro-Atlanta Collaborative (KIPP MAC) seeks an experienced Director of Finance who will be responsible for all financial functions within the organization and will ensure that the organization continues to grow while maintaining financial stability. KIPP MAC was created in 2004 to support the collective mission of the two KIPP Academies by advocating for their common goals, accessing financial and human resources for their common needs, and administering programs and services that serve the common good of their students and employees. The Collaborative is also charged with advancing the KIPP mission by seeking partnership opportunities by which the KIPP schools can share best practices and successfully open additional schools.


Key Responsibilities

 

•  Develop systems for purchasing, check requisitions, accounts payable, bill paying, etc.
    that ultimately transitions the financial management of schools to the Collaborative.
•  Coordinate and interface with the operations personnel at each school site
•  Establish fiscal policies and procedures for the Collaborative
•  Prepare and review all monthly financial statements with school principals and
    Executive Director.
•  Prepare and provide weekly updates of bank balances.
•  Manage bookkeeping process to ensure that AR, AP are entered in a timely and
    accurate manner; review AR, AP and reconciliations.
•  Perform the month-end close (credit cards, bank statements and payroll) for all
    schools.
•  Review Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Bank Reconciliations and other staff
    tasks.
•  Prepare investment reconciliations, if any.
•  Deliver management reports to the principals and Executive Director.
•  Maintain program budgets including 5-year budget projections for all programs.
•  Manage and execute year-end audits including 990 applications for all schools.
•  Maintain and update fiscal calendar including all reporting deadlines including but not
    limited to audit schedule, initiation of annual budget process, monthly close date, etc.
•  Ensure delivery of all financial reports on time to school principals, charter authorizers
    and other agencies as necessary.
•  Attend board meetings and present financial statements.
•  Strategize about ways in which KIPP can become more fiscally efficient and effective.

Candidate Qualifications

 

•  Minimum of Bachelor's Degree, with strong preference for candidates with MBA
•  At least 5 years of significant work experience with organizations (budgets exceeding
    $5MM) as a CFO, Director of Finance, Comptroller or equivalent.
•  Thorough understanding of industry standards.
•  Proficiency in Quickbooks and other accounting software.
•  Understands how to develop financial models for growth and expansion
•  Demonstrates the ability to manage the entrepreneurial challenges of creating a new
    organization including partnership creation and the development of systems and
    procedures
•  Can work effectively in a fluid environment and with a wide ranged of constituents,
    including board members, school personnel, and vendors
